How Organic Gardening Can Help You Thrive And Survive

Posted on July 31, 2018March 16, 2019 by Louise B. Delia

One great way to improve your diet and give yourself a fun an interesting hobby is to plant an organic garden. However, you should be aware that organic gardening is hard work. You may be unsure about how to go about this kind of gardening.

Allow your children to actively participate in planting your organic garden. You can provide a good learning experience that your children can appreciate the more they learn on how to grow healthy produce.

When growing plants inside of the house, you should ensure the thermostat is set at around 65-75 degrees in the daytime. They need this type of warm temperature in order to grow. If you don’t like keeping your home that temperature in the winter, you may wish to consider getting a heat lamp, instead, to keep your organic plants the correct temperature.

Pay attention to how much light your indoor plants are getting. If you’re living in a home that doesn’t receive much sunlight, you should consider growing plants that thrive in environments with low to medium amounts of light. You can also try using artificial lighting to help.

Keep your garden tools close at hand to make the most of your gardening time. Use a large bucket, or wear rugged pants with several pockets. You should be able to do your garden work quickly if you keep a trowel, gloves, small pruning shears, and other handy devices close to you.

Use an old laundry basket to collect your produce. This laundry basket can be used as a type of strainer for all your produce. Rinse off your produce while it’s in the laundry basket, and any excess water will be strained out through the basket’s holes.

Do you want to kill weeds naturally? Take layers of newspapers and use them for weed control. In order to grow, weeds need sunlight. If you put a thick layer of newspaper on them, weeds will not be able to get light or air, and they will die! It’s easy for newspapers to break down over an extended period of time, making them great for compost. Cover the newspaper with a thick layer of mulch for a more attractive look.

Use untreated stone, brick or wood to build raised beds. If you choose wood, it needs to be naturally rot resistant and untreated. Optimal wood choices that fit these criteria are locust, cypress, and cedar. Avoid using treated wood since they contain chemicals that could disperse into the soil or the crops. If your existing garden structure contains treated wood, at least take the time to make a plastic lining beneath the soil.

One way to profitably sell products from your organic garden is to be a credible organic gardener. Get organically certified. This will increase your sales, and it will prove to your customers that they have quality products.

As you were reading through this article, were you inspired to put forth the research, time and effort into adopting organic gardening techniques? For the best results, you need to be dedicated to the work. Keep the above advice at hand and you too can excel with organic gardening.
