Useful Advice For Growing Produce Organically

Posted on January 27, 2019March 16, 2019 by Louise B. Delia

In the world of organic gardening, there are plenty of great resources available to both new and experienced organic gardeners alike. There are many e-guides, books, videos, and other resources available. This set of tips contains some of the best advice for helping a good organic gardener become a great organic gardener.

Clay soil is hard and will also stick to a shovel, making it difficult to work with. Use a thin coat of floor or car wax on your shovel, then buff it with a nice clean cloth to make dealing with clay soil easier. Not only will the clay slide off the surface, but it will keep the end from rusting.

It may be helpful to let your plants begin their life in a pot and to transfer them to your garden when they’re seedlings. By allowing them to sprout first, you are increasing the odds of a seedling reaching maturity. In addition, it lets you tighten the time in between plantings. You will have healthy seedlings that are ready to be planted when you get rid of old plants.

Use perennials resistant to slugs and snails. Snails and slugs can quickly wreak havoc on a garden. Young plants with smooth and tender leaves are their favorite. Perennials that are unappetizing in taste, or that have hardened and hairy leaves, are not a favorite of slugs or snails. Good choices in this category are plants such as achillea, campanula, and euphorbia. Heuchera and helleborus also work well.

Use biennials and annuals to add color to your flower beds. Your flower beds will look different from one season to another. They can be used to fill in gaps in your garden between the perennials or shrubs so your garden looks fuller. Some examples include sunflowers, marigolds, petunias, hollyhocks, cosmos, and rudbeckia.

If you want to grow vegetables in you backyard, it is vital that you place them in an area where they could get roughly six hours of sun on a daily basis. Pretty much any vegetable you plant in your garden requires sunshine for this duration. It allows them to grow in the proper manner and also much faster. Some flowers have the same requirement for growth.

Invest in a quality wheelbarrow and a kneeling stool if gardening work is going to happen often. Get a portable stool if you want to garden comfortably without damaging your knees. Gardening also usually requires that you transport heavy loads, such as dirt or mulch, and a wheelbarrow will make this much easier to do.

Know the ideal times to harvest each of the vegetables you plant. Individual vegetables have distinct windows of time to pick for getting the greatest flavors. Many vegetables are best when picked young; baby peas are a prime example. In contrast, tomatoes are best when left on the vine as long as possible. So, find out the best time to harvest your vegetables.

With the information you just learned, you can start trying different organic methods in your own garden. There is a ton of information you should know, and you also should know how to use it. If you use what you’ve learned and keep on learning, you can come up with your own methods of growing a lovely organic garden.
